The Passion of Prophecy

This event is brought to you by the department of Lifelong Learning at Virginia Theological Seminary

This Tuesday evening class will meet online for a total of 4 classes via Zoom meeting from 6:30 - 7:55 p.m. eastern from January 31 - February 21.

This Lifelong Learning short course explores the power and passion of biblical prophecy. Through creative Bible study (including art, music, PowerPoint, film, and lively discussion), we will discover how the Bible uses all kinds of people—men, women, and children—as divine-human intermediaries. Our course will first introduce the concept of prophecy, then focus on specific texts related to Miriam, Isaiah, Jeremiah, and multiple prophetic children. We will discover not only how prophecy shapes the biblical story but also how it is relevant—and vibrant—in our own time.

The Rev. Dr. Julie Faith Parker is Professor of Biblical Studies at The General Theological Seminary of the Episcopal Church. She holds a Ph.D. in Old Testament/Hebrew Bible from Yale University, awarded with distinction. She also holds degrees from Yale Divinity School (S.T.M.), Union Theological Seminary [in New York City] (M.Div.), and Hamilton College (B.A.; Phi Beta Kappa). An ordained minister in the United Methodist Church, she worked as a congregational pastor then a university chaplain before undertaking doctoral studies. Dr. Parker taught at multiple institutions prior to General, including Yale Divinity School, Colby College, Trinity Lutheran Seminary, Fordham University, and New York Theological Seminary, teaching students incarcerated in Sing Sing Maximum Security Prison. She recently completed her eighth book, Eve Isn’t Evil, to be published by Baker Academic.
